MOVING TO SOLID WOOD: A SOUND BUSINESS DECISION

By the early 1950s, Baronet has become a major supplier to leading Canadian department stores, including Sears, Simpson’s and Eaton’s. New home furniture collections, particularly bedroom sets, replace the institutional lines that targeted a regional market. By 1952, when Roland Lacroix becomes the sole Baronet shareholder, Baronet furniture is sold across Canada.

In 1968, the acquisition of a sawmill at the border with Maine marks the changeover to solid wood furniture manufacturing. Baronet becomes known as an expert in solid wood furniture for children. Spurred by the baby boom, Baronet experiences a rapid growth, and the Sainte-Marie factory doubles its capacity.

Baronet also appoints a new Head Designer, Vell Hubel, who, within his first two years, creates a new product line that will remain in production for over two decades.
